The Harris family’s commitment to agriculture began over 100 years ago, spanning across multiple states and four generations. Spearheaded by James Alexander Harris and his wife, Kate, their emergence in the farming industry arose in Mississippi in the late 1880’s, progressing as they moved their operations to Texas and Arizona, prior to settling in California.
In 1916, they arrived in the Imperial Valley of Southern California to establish one of California’s first cotton gins, as well as other cotton-related businesses. In the 1920s, the family expanded their operations into the San Joaquin Valley.
J.A. and Kate Harris moved their family to the Sacramento area where their only son, Jack Harris, graduated from Chico High School in 1932; prior to attending Cal Poly San Luis Obispo.
In 1937, Jack Harris and his wife, Teresa, began what is now known as Harris Ranch, starting their journey with a previously unfarmed 320 acres of desert land on the Valley’s Western edge. With a vision for the land and unwavering determination, the Harris family has grown the Harris Ranch brand into one of the largest agribusiness in the United States.
This small family farm boomed and expanded into a successful, diversified company. From humble beginnings in the cotton industry, the Harris Family significantly expanded their farming operations to produce numerous crops annually, including lettuce, tomatoes, garlic, onions, melons, oranges, almonds, pistachios, wine grapes, and more. At its peak, Harris Farms produced over 33 crops annually.
Harris Farms, Inc. is one of the most integrated and diversified family-owned businesses in the nation built upon the legacy of Jack Harris. Today, that legacy is proudly carried forward by his son, John Harris.
While our awarding-winning hotel and restaurants are what brought you to discovering the Harris Ranch Resort, we are a part of a distinct family of companies that has expanded into one of the most integrated and diversified family-owned businesses in the nation.
